used to assign ages to the formation of the universe and the solar system;

4. explain the way in which the
Earth acquired its layered structure, the formation of the atmosphere and
oceans;

5. define craton, shield, greenstone
belt;

6. describe the origin and evolution
of the continents;

7. characterize Archean rocks and
the important economic deposits that they contain;

8. interpret the fossil record of
the Archean and indicate the significance of stromatolites;

9. have a basic understanding about
the origin of life and the characteristics of primitive life forms.
