PALEOZOIC GEOLOGY
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this
unit you should be able to:
-
1. Describe the location of the
continental masses throughout the Paleozoic in the context of the plate
tectonics theory;
-
2. characterize the changing paleogeography
of the North American continent during the Paleozoic era;
-
3. explain the evolution and location
of cratonic areas, shallow seas, depositional basins and orogenic belts
in the North American continent;
-
4. correlate orogenic events in
the North American continent with related orogenies in other continents;
-
5. elaborate on the tectonic evolution
of both eastern and western mobile belts;
-
7. discuss relevant aspects of the
Paleozoic climate emphasizing the key elements to its characterization
such as glacial deposits, evaporites, coal, reefs and limestone deposits;
-
8. analyze the occurrence of cyclothemes
in the stratigraphic record and interpret their geologic implications.
