PALEOZOIC LIFE
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this
unit you should be able to:
-
1. describe the characteristics
of the marine invertebrate faunas of the Paleozoic and how they changed
through time;
-
2. evaluate the advantages of the
evolution of skeletal structures in Early Paleozoic invertebrates;
-
3. discuss the significance of Burgess
Shale fauna;
-
4. describe how the nature of reefs
changed throughout the Paleozoic;
-
5. identify the invertebrate predators
of the Early Paleozoic and how they evolved;
-
6. explain the age and nature of
the first fossils corresponding to vertebrates;
-
4. analyze the evolution of large
vertebrates through the Paleozoic indicating what features fitted them
to survive and evolve into superior forms;
-
5. summarize the Paleozoic developments
in the plant kingdom, pointing out the characteristics of each successive
group of plants;
-
6. identify Paleozoic extinction
events and characterize their magnitude;
-
7. indicate what groups were affected
in each case;
-
8. elaborate on the possible causes
for the Paleozoic extinctions and how they would have affected the different
members of the biota.
