Volcanoes
of the Puna Plateau - 1 credit
Preference
is
given to students previously enrolled in the Pampas to the Andes
Program.
Location:
Antofagasta
de
la Sierra in the Province of Catamarca will serve as center of logistic
support for field trips to visit volcanoes and salt basins in Salta and
Catamarca Provinces of Argentina.
Instruction:
Lecture and
directed
field work. Most of the classes will take place at field locations.
Taught
in English by UGA faculty.
Purpose:
Analysis of
subduction
zone volcanism and geologic processes magnificently exposed in the
extremely
arid, remote and high altitude environment of the Puna Plateau.
Estimated
cost:
The Program
fee
is $ 1,450 and may vary if there are significant changes in the
exchange
rate of the currency or prices due to inflation in Argentina. This fee
includes housing at hotels
or hostels, all meals, internal airfare to Salta, ground transportation
in four wheel drive vehicles, excursions. International airfare and
tuition
not included. Limited to 6 students.

Scholarships
and Finalcial
Aid:
If you qualify for
the
HOPE scholarship, HOPE funds can be used to pay tuition and a book
allowance
for the Study Abroad Program. Other scholarships may be available. If
you
are planning on traveling the coming summer, beware that applications
for
many of the scholarships are due in the Fall. Please find more
information
about shcolarships and financial aid at the Office
of International Education Financial Aid site.
Qualifications:
Preference
is
given to students previously enrolled in the geology in Argentina
program.
Physical fitness to work at altitudes of 15,000 feet required. Not
recommended
for students with a history of respiratory or heart problems. Also open
to non-University System of Georgia students.
Application
Deadline:
February 2,
2007.
Late applications will be considered if the program is not full. Maximum
enrollment: 6 students. Apply early to insure your spot in the program
extension. You may
get
an application package or request it by
regular
mail
(address at the bottom of this page).
Excursions
and other Details:
Explore
the breath-taking beauty of the Antofalla and Quevar volcanoes. A
guided 4x4 excursion takes you into the heart of Cerro Galan's giant
caldera
to find a nested salt lake and endemic wildlife. Experience walking on
the alien landscape of the salt basins of Salar del Hombre Muerto, the
Campo de Piedra Pomez or ascend to the top of one of the Antofagasta
Volcanoes.
Visit present and past mining operations. Drive among protected herds
of
high altitude fauna as vicunas, llamas and "suris" (South American
ostriches).
Free afternoon in the colonial city of Salta.
